For the inverse-weight Lin–Lu–YauRicci flow on a finite tree, we prove that the curvature satisfies an exact heat equation and that every edge curvature converges. The limiting curvature vector is independent of the positive initial metric and is the unique minimum-norm point of the base polyhedron of a submodular function determined by the tree; in particular, it can be recovered by finitely many combinatorial minimizations. We also characterize subsequential limits of the normalized weights and obtain criteria for their convergence. Finally, for any two positive initial metrics, the corresponding unnormalized edgewise ratios converge, and the normalized omega-limit sets are related by a projective homeomorphism.
We present a numerical method that constructs geometrically defined coordinates on black-hole horizons, from which the multipole moments are computed without assuming axisymmetry. This method, which we denote the conformal-mapping method (CMM), provides a numerical realization of the conformal construction proposed by Ashtekar et al. in 2022, combining discrete Ricci flow, spectral embedding onto the unit sphere, and Möbius gauge fixing by the vanishing-area-dipole condition. We first test the CMM against analytic Kerr benchmarks, and then apply it to an equal-mass, non-spinning binary black-hole merger. We also compare it with an approximate-symmetry-based method. The CMM allows the multipole moments to be expressed in a fixed reference frame, whereas the symmetry-adapted frame can reorient abruptly when the preferred approximate axis changes. In a frame aligned with the orbital angular momentum, the amplitude of the quadrupole mode grows during inspiral and decays after merger, displaying a qualitative ringdown behavior. These results show that the CMM is a useful tool for studying horizon geometry in dynamical situations where no stable symmetry axis is available.
In this note, we prove that, on weighted graphs, the Lin–Lu–Yau curvature coincides with the p-Ollivier curvature up to scaling whenever the idleness parameter p≥1/2. Moreover, the threshold 1/2 is sharp. This extends an earlier result of Bourne et al. (Ollivier–Ricci idleness functions of graphs, SIAM J. Discrete Math., 32 (2018), no. 2, 1408-1424), where combinatorial graphs were considered. This observation yields a simple proof for the global existence and uniqueness of solutions of the Lin–Lu–Yau curvature flow in Bai et al. (Ollivier Ricci-flow on weighted graphs, Amer. J. Math. 146 (2024), 1723-1747).
Nilpotent Lie groups with left-invariant metrics provide nontrivial examples of Ricci solitons. Some typical examples are given by the class of two-step nilpotent Lie algebras obtained from simple directed graphs and the class of nilpotent Lie algebras obtained from finite acyclic quivers. In this paper, we generalize the construction of nilpotent Lie algebras that are algebraic Ricci solitons obtained from finite acyclic quivers. We use some special ordered sets to construct nilpotent Lie algebras, which can also be obtained from some special quivers with relations. A transitively and antisymmetrically ordered set (or TAOS, for short) is a set together with a binary relation that is transitive and antisymmetric. Utilizing the concept of incidence algebras of TAOSs, we construct nilpotent Lie algebras. We modify the method introduced by Mizoguchi and Tamaru and use it to show that the nilpotent Lie algebras with arbitrarily high degrees of nilpotency obtained from some special finite transitively and antisymmetrically ordered sets, called array TAOSs, are algebraic Ricci solitons. We also give some generalizations of this result, which yield more nilpotent Lie algebras that are algebraic Ricci solitons. Moreover, the corresponding simply-connected nilpotent Lie groups admit left-invariant Ricci solitons.
In this paper, we consider the Ricci flow with prescribed curvature on infinite graphs, which reads as \beginequation* \fracddtω(t)=-(κ(t)-κ^*)ω(t), t>0, \endequation* where ω is the edge weight, κ and κ∗ are Lin-Lu-Yau Ricci curvature and the prescribed curvature on the set of edges, respectively. First, we establish the existence and uniqueness of the solution to the Ricci flow. Furthermore, we prove the convergence of the Ricci flow for graphs with girth at least 6 under two different conditions. Our convergence result aligns with the conclusion of Rodin and Sullivan (J Differ Geom, 26(2) 1987) that a circle packing in the plane with the hexagonal pattern is the regular hexagonal packing.
In this paper, we consider the Ricci flow with prescribed curvature on the finite graphG=(V,E). For any e in E, dtdω(t,e)=−(κ(t,e)−κ∗(e))ω(t,e),t>0, where ω is the weight function, κ is Lin-Lu-Yau Ricci curvature, and κ∗ is the prescribed curvature. By imposing invariance of the graph distance with respect to time t, the Ricci flow introduced above characterizes the weight evolution governed by the Lin-Lu-Yau curvature. We first establish the existence and uniqueness of the solution to this equation on general graphs. Furthermore, for graphs with girth of at least 6, we prove that the Ricci flow converges exponentially to weights of κ∗ if and only if κ∗ is attainable (namely, there exist weights realizing κ∗). In particular, we prove that the weights for constant curvature exist if and only if ∅=Ω⊊Vmax∣Ω∣∣E(Ω)∣<∣V∣∣E∣, where E(Ω) denotes the set of edges within the induced subgraph of Ω, and ∣A∣ is the cardinality of the set A. Viewing edge weights as metrics on surface tilings with girth of at least 5 or the duals of triangulations with vertex degrees exceeding 5, we demonstrate that our constant Lin-Lu-Yau curvature flow serves as an analog to the 2D combinatorial Ricci flow for piecewise constant curvature metrics, thereby providing an affirmative answer to Question 2 posed by Chow and Luo (J Differ Geom, 63(1) 2002).
Let S be an oriented closed surface with a cellular decomposition D and a weight Φ∈(0,π). It is crucial to determine when S supports an ideal D-type circle pattern P with the exterior intersection angles given by Φ. Rivin, Bobenko-Springborn and Ge-Hua-Zhou provided perfect solutions and gave wonderful criteria for the existence and uniqueness of ideal circle patterns. However, all criteria established by Rivin, Bobenko-Springborn and Ge-Hua-Zhou are extremely difficult to verify for the given cellular decomposition D and the weight Φ. In this paper, we introduce the character L(D,Φ) depends only on the data of the weighted cellular decomposition (D,Φ) on S, and give some quite simple criteria for the existence of ideal circle patterns realizing (D,Φ). It seems that our character-type criteria are the first conditions totally different from criteria of Rivin, Bobenko-Springborn and Ge-Hua-Zhou, and provide more easily verifiable criteria. Our new character-type theorems may be of some independent interest. As an application, we give a new descriptions of the curvature image set K(R>0N). To approach our results, we shall use the combinatorial Ricci flows with ideal circle patterns introduced by Ge-Hua-Zhou as a fundamental tool. The main difficulty in the proof of our results is to establish the compactness of the solution to the flows. To circumvent the difficulty, we borrow the techniques developed by Ge and his collaborators.
In this paper, we study a combinatorial Ricci flow on closed pseudo 3-manifolds (M,T). We prove that if every edge in the triangulation T has valence at least 9, then the combinatorial Ricci flow converges exponentially fast to a hyperbolic metric. As a consequence, for any compact 3-manifold N with boundary admitting an ideal triangulation TN whose edges all have valence at least 9, there exists a unique complete hyperbolic metric with totally geodesic boundary on N such that TN is isotopic to a geometric decomposition of N. This provides a partial solution to the conjecture of Costantino, Frigerio, Martelli and Petronio, and hence an affirmative answer of Thurston's geometric ideal triangulation conjecture for such manifolds. Moreover, we obtain explicit upper and lower bounds for the resulting hyperbolic metric.
The present work constitutes the third installment in a series of investigations devoted to discrete conformal structures on surfaces with boundary. In our preceding works, we established, respectively, a classification of these discrete conformal structures and results on their rigidity and existence. Building on this foundation, the present work focuses on the deformation theory of discrete conformal structures on surfaces with boundary. Specifically, we introduce the combinatorial Ricci flow and the combinatorial Calabi flow, and establish the longtime existence and global convergence of solutions to these combinatorial curvature flows. These results yield effective algorithms for finding discrete hyperbolic metrics on surfaces with totally geodesic boundaries of prescribed lengths.
In his seminal work, Rivin characterized finite ideal polyhedra in three-dimensional hyperbolic space. However, the characterization of infinite ideal polyhedra, as proposed by Rivin, has remained a long-standing open problem. In this paper, we introduce the combinatorial Ricci flow for infinite ideal circle patterns, a discrete analogue of Ricci flow on non-compact Riemannian manifolds, and prove a characterization of such circle patterns under certain combinatorial conditions. Our results provide affirmative solutions to Rivin's problem.
In this paper we introduce the branched α-flows on closed surfaces with Euler characteristic χ≤0. Based on the strict convexity of the branched α-potentials, we establish the long time existence and convergence of the solutions to the branched α-flows, which generalizes Ge and Xu's main results on the α-flows. In addtion, we study the prescribed curvature problems under the relaxed precondition χ(M)∈Z via alternative α-flows, establishing admissibility conditions for prescribed curvatures and their exponential convergence to target metrics.
In this paper, we investigate the prescribed total geodesic curvature problem for generalized circle packing metrics in hyperbolic background geometry on surfaces with infinite cellular decompositions. To address this problem, we introduce a prescribed curvature flow-a discrete analogue of the Ricci flow on noncompact surfaces-specifically adapted to the setting of infinite cellular decompositions. We establish the well-posedness of the flow and prove two convergence results under certain conditions. Our approach resolves the prescribed total geodesic curvature problem for a broad class of surfaces with infinite cellular decompositions, yielding, in certain cases, smooth hyperbolic surfaces of infinite topological type with geodesic boundaries or cusps. Moreover, the proposed flow provides a method for constructing hyperbolic metrics from appropriate initial data.
Since the fundamental work of Chow-Luo, Ge et al., the combinatorial curvature flow methods became a basic technique in the study of circle pattern theory. In this paper, we investigate the combinatorial Ricci flow with prescribed total geodesic curvatures in spherical background geometry. For infinite cellular decompositions, we establish the existence of a solution to the flow equation for all time. Furthermore, under an additional condition, we prove that the solution converges as time tends to infinity. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study of an infinite combinatorial curvature flow in spherical background geometry.
Guo and Luo introduced generalized circle patterns on surfaces and proved their rigidity. In this paper, we prove the existence of Guo-Luo's generalized circle patterns with prescribed generalized intersection angles on surfaces with cusps, which partially answers a question raised by Guo-Luo and generalizes Bobenko-Springborn's hyperbolic circle patterns on closed surfaces to generalized hyperbolic circle patterns on surfaces with cusps. We further introduce the combinatorial Ricci flow and combinatorial Calabi flow for generalized circle patterns on surfaces with cusps, and prove the longtime existence and convergence of the solutions for these combinatorial curvature flows.
In this paper, we introduce combinatorial Ricci flows (CRFs in short) in Euclidean and hyperbolic background geometries on infinite triangulations of the open disk, which are discrete analogs of Ricci flows on simply connected open surfaces. We establish well-posedness results, the existence and the uniqueness, of CRFs in both Euclidean and hyperbolic background geometries. Moreover, we prove convergence results of CRFs, which indicate a uniformization theorem for CRFs on infinite disk triangulations. As an application, we prove an existence result of circle-packing metrics with infinite prescribed cone angles in hyperbolic background geometry. To our knowledge, these are the first results of CRFs on infinite triangulations.
Thurston's triangulation conjecture asserts that every hyperbolic 3-manifold admits a geometric triangulation into hyper-ideal hyperbolic tetrahedra. So far, this conjecture had only been proven for a few special 3-manifolds. In this article, we confirm this conjecture for a class of 3-manifolds. To be precise, let M be an oriented compact 3-manifold with boundary, no component of which is a 2-sphere, and T is an ideal triangulation of M. If T satisfies properly gluing condition, and the valence is at least 6 at each ideal edge and 11 at each hyper-ideal edge, then M admits an unique complete hyperbolic metric with totally geodesic boundary, so that T is isotopic to a geometric ideal triangulation of M. We use analytical tools such as combinatorial Ricci flow (CRF, abbr.) to derive the conclusions. There are intrinsic difficulties in dealing with CRF. First, the CRF may collapse in a finite time, second, most of the smooth curvature flow methods are no longer applicable since there is no local coordinates in T, and third, the evolution of CRF is affected by certain combinatorial obstacles in addition to topology. To this end, we introduce the ideas as "extending CRF", "tetrahedral comparison principles", and "control CRF with edge valence" to solve the above difficulties. In addition, the presence of torus boundary adds substantial difficulties in this article, which we have solved by introducing the properly gluing conditions on T and reducing the ECRF to a flow relatively easy to handle.
Thurston's triangulation conjecture asserts that every hyperbolic 3-manifold admits a geometric decomposition into ideal hyperbolic tetrahedra, a result proven only for certain special 3-manifolds. This paper presents combinatorial Ricci flow as a systematic and general approach to addressing Thurston's triangulation conjecture, showing that the flow converges if and only if the triangulation is geometric. First, we prove the rigidity of the most general hyperbolic polyhedral 3-manifolds constructed by isometrically gluing partially truncated and decorated hyperbolic tetrahedra, demonstrating that the metrics are uniquely determined by cone angles modulo isometry and decoration changes. Then, we demonstrate that combinatorial Ricci flow evolves polyhedral metrics toward complete hyperbolic structures with geometric decompositions when convergent. Conversely, the existence of a geometric triangulation guarantees flow convergence.
In this paper, we extend the work of Ge-Hua-Zhou on combinatorial Ricci flows for ideal circle patterns to combinatorial Calabi flows in both hyperbolic and Euclidean background geometry. We prove the solution to the combinatorial Calabi flows with any given initial Euclidean (hyperbolic resp.)ideal circle pattern exists for all time and converges exponentially fast to a flat cone metric (hyperbolic resp.) on a given surface.
On a connected finite graph, we propose an evolution of weights including Ollivier's Ricci flow as a special case. During the evolution process, on each edge, the speed of change of weight is exactly the difference between the Wasserstein distance related to two probability measures and certain graph distance. Here the probability measure may be chosen as an α-lazy one-step random walk, an α-lazy two-step random walk, or a general probability measure. Based on the ODE theory, we show that the initial value problem has a unique global solution. A discrete version of the above evolution is applied to the problem of community detection. Our algorithm is based on such a discrete evolution, where probability measures are chosen as α-lazy one-step random walk and α-lazy two-step random walk respectively. Note that the latter measure has not been used in previous works. Moreover, only one surgery needs to be performed after the last iteration, which makes our algorithm much simpler than earlier ones based on Lin-Lu-Yau's Ricci curvature.
This paper investigates a kind of degenerated circle packings in hyperbolic background geometry. A main problem is whether a prescribed total geodesic curvature data can be realized by a degenerated circle packing or not. We fully characterize the sufficient and necessary conditions and show the uniqueness. Furthermore, we introduce the combinatoral Ricci flow to find the desired degenerated circle packed surface, analougus to the methods of Chow-Luo and Takatsu.
In this paper, we study the existence and rigidity of (degenerated) circle pattern metric with prescribed total geodesic curvatures in spherical background geometry. To find the (degenerated) circle pattern metric with prescribed total geodesic curvatures, we define some prescribed combinatorial Ricci flows and study the convergence of flows for (degenerated) circle pattern metrics. We solve the prescribed total geodesic curvature problem and provide two methods to find the degenerated circle pattern metric with prescribed total geodesic curvatures. As far as we know, this is the first degenerated result for total geodesic curvatures in spherical background geometry.
Machine learning techniques are increasingly powerful, leading to many breakthroughs in the natural sciences, but they are often stochastic, error-prone, and blackbox. How, then, should they be utilized in fields such as theoretical physics and pure mathematics that place a premium on rigor and understanding? In this Perspective we discuss techniques for obtaining rigor in the natural sciences with machine learning. Non-rigorous methods may lead to rigorous results via conjecture generation or verification by reinforcement learning. We survey applications of these techniques-for-rigor ranging from string theory to the smooth 4d Poincaré conjecture in low-dimensional topology. One can also imagine building direct bridges between machine learning theory and either mathematics or theoretical physics. As examples, we describe a new approach to field theory motivated by neural network theory, and a theory of Riemannian metric flows induced by neural network gradient descent, which encompasses Perelman's formulation of the Ricci flow that was utilized to resolve the 3d Poincaré conjecture.
Glickenstein introduced the discrete conformal structures on polyhedral surfaces in an axiomatic approach from Riemannian geometry perspective. It includes Thurston's circle packings, Bowers-Stephenson's inversive distance circle packings and Luo's vertex scalings as special cases. In this paper, we study the deformation of Glickenstein's discrete conformal structures by combinatorial curvature flows. The combinatorial Ricci flow for Glickenstein's discrete conformal structures on triangulated surfaces is a generalization of Chow-Luo's combinatorial Ricci flow for Thurston's circle packings and Luo's combinatorial Yamabe flow for vertex scalings. We prove that the solution of the combinatorial Ricci flow for Glickenstein's discrete conformal structures on triangulated surfaces can be uniquely extended. Furthermore, under some necessary conditions, we prove that the solution of the extended combinatorial Ricci flow on a triangulated surface exists for all time and converges exponentially fast for any initial value. We further introduce the combinatorial Calabi flow for Glickenstein's discrete conformal structures on triangulated surfaces and study the basic properties of the flow. These combinatorial curvature flows provide effective algorithms for finding piecewise constant curvature metrics on surfaces with prescribed combinatorial curvatures.
This paper investigates a generalized hyperbolic circle packing (including circles, horocycles or hypercycles) with respect to the total geodesic curvatures on the surface with boundary. We mainly focus on the existence and rigidity of circle packing whose contact graph is the 1-skeleton of a finite polygonal cellular decomposition, which is analogous to the construction of Bobenko and Springborn [4]. Motivated by Colin de Verdière's method [6], we introduce the variational principle for generalized hyperbolic circle packings on polygons. By analyzing limit behaviours of generalized circle packings on polygons, we give an existence and rigidity for the generalized hyperbolic circle packing with conical singularities regarding the total geodesic curvature on each vertex of the contact graph. As a consequence, we introduce the combinatoral Ricci flow to find a desired circle packing with a prescribed total geodesic curvature on each vertex of the contact graph.
In this paper, we prove that given a hyperbolic polyhedral metric with an inversive distance circle packing, and a target discrete curvature satisfying Gauss-Bonnet formula, there exist a unique inversive distance circle packing which is discrete conformal to the former one. We deform the surface by discrete Ricci flow, and do surgery by edge flipping when the orthogonal circles of some faces are about to be non-compact. The revised weighted Delaunay inequality of hyperbolic case implies the compactness of the orthogonal circle. We use a variational principle of a convex Ricci potential defined on the fiber bundles with cell-decomposition and differential structure based on Teichmüller space to finish the proof.
We prove that for any discrete curvature satisfying Gauss-Bonnet formula, there exist a unique up to scaling inversive distance circle packing in the discrete conformal equivalent class, whose polyhedral metric meets the target curvature. We prove it by constructing diffeomorphism between fiber bundles with cell decomposition based on Teichmüller spaces, and each discrete conformal equivalent class is a fiber passing through finite cell with respect to triangulations, which means we can do surgery on the discrete Ricci flow by edge flipping using a generalized Ptolemy equation to ensure it converge and never blow up.
Motivated by Guo-Luo's generalized circle packings on surfaces with boundary, we introduce the generalized sphere packings on 3-dimensionalmanifolds with boundary. Then we investigate the rigidity of the generalized sphere packing metrics. We prove that the generalized sphere packing metric is determined by the combinatorial scalar curvature. To find the hyper-ideal polyhedral metrics on 3-dimensional manifolds with prescribed combinatorial scalar curvature, we introduce the combinatorial Ricci flow and combinatorial Calabi flow for the generalized sphere packings on 3-dimensional manifolds with boundary. Then we study the longtime existence and convergence for the solutions of these combinatorial curvature flows.
